Mr. Hartley, before we begin with the interview, please introduce yourself in 3-4 sentences briefly.
_John Hartley [jh]: I am a sole practitioner, have done many things in my career including manufacturing, attended the GSD at Harvard, and live in Los Angeles.

Question 1: What was your first job after graduating?
_jh: For Machado and Silvetti

Question 2: Why should clients in any case work together with an architect?
_jh: Today it is all the more important, given the reality of sustainability, and the increased consciousness about design.

Question 3: How would you describe your architectural style?
_jh: t is not a style.

Question 4: Which book or film has impressed you in the last time?
_jh: The Lives of Others

Question 5: Who are your role models and why?
_jh: John Lennon- Music and independence
Le Corbusier- Architecture and independence
Richard Branson- Business and independence

Question 6: Is the client king or should he be guided to his luck by an architect?
_jh: The client must be respected and be a partner.

Question 7: Which subject in course of studies best prepared you for your profession?
_jh: Studio

Question 8: From Paul Valéry comes the term „architecture is music made in stone.“ What referees to the question, what music you’re currently happy to hear?
_jh: Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, John Hassle

Question 9: Which building would you like to design and why?
_jh: Villa Savoye – Everything seen and represented

_jh: ….an honor to practice

_jh: Richard Branson, May I design something for you?

I am glad to have you as an non-german speaking architect on my magazine. So I take the opportunity to ask you a few more questions interesting for me and others. How to become an architect in the USA?
_jh: School, Apprenticeship, Exam

In germany you have to be a member of the architectural chamber to call yourself an architect. Is there any comparable in your country?
_jh: Yes, registration in the state you practice.

What about the current market situation in your place?
_jh: Challenging

Are there any special architectual conditions in the USA]?
_jh: Hmmmmm…….the green train.
