_mv: A 4 apartments + 2 shops on ground floor block.

Question 2: Why should clients in any case work together with an architect?
_mv: Architects have an added value to their product (hate to call it that). Engineers, ate least in Spain, know about efficiency, reducing cost, operational optimization…but don’t know about integration, about the social side of architecture…Please note I’m purposedly not talking about art. I really abhor being considered an artist.

Question 3: How would you describe your architectural style?
_mv: Service to people. Style is just like an accent when you speak, completely contingent if your words are true and sincere.

_mv: Several of the architects I worked with as a student, they have an outstanding skill as professionals and an even more outstanding care and affection for people through the service they provide.

Question 6: Is the client king or should he be guided to his luck by an architect?
_mv: We should not guide but take care of. The client can be wrong, horribly wrong, and it is our duty to tell them in that case. If the client persists in its error, its a moral debate to continue and keep the work (and income) or to leave that client and keep integrity (and hunger)

Question 7: Which subject in course of studies best prepared you for your profession?
_mv: Project design as a single one, competing directly with Architecture Theory (wich made us learn how to think), but the whole career as a whole is what made us be able to work in such difficult conditions.

Question 8: From Paul Valéry comes the term „architecture is music made in stone.“ What referees to the question, what music you’re currently happy to hear?
_mv: Silence. Or if I’m forced, all the soundtracks from the latest american tv shows, they are relaxing…and somehow complex

Question 9: Which building would you like to design and why?
_mv: My parents‘ house. I think I couldn’t care more for a client that I would for them.

Question 10: Architecture is … ?
_mv: besides my family, my life.

And finally, question 11: What question would you like to ask and whom?
_mv: Kazuyo Seijima: how is it so easy?

I am glad to have you as an non-german speaking architect on my magazine. So I take the opportunity to ask you a few more questions interesting for me and others. How to become an architect in your country?
_mv: For us six years plus final project. Study plans of 1998 5 + project. Now, right now, legally changing and having really huge possible problems with Engineers.

In germany you have to be a member of the architectural chamber to call yourself an architect. Is there any comparable in your country?
_mv: Yes. You have to joind the chamber too here. There is a chamber in each province and a national council of chambers.

What about the current market situation in your place?
_mv: Disaster. Banks don’t give money to buyers nor investors who themselves don’t invest as they know they are not going to sell…The housing excess is due to be absorbed by the market in 2012

Are there any special architectual conditions in Spain?
_mv: Overpopulation of architects. About 1 architect for each 1000 inhabitants.

Thank you Mr Villegas.
